Ísfléttur

70x36 inches each // Hand-cut Eco-solvent Print on Vinyl, Grommets
The Factory / GAMLA SÍLDARVERKSMIÐJAN / Djúpavík, Iceland

Ísfléttur is an image-based sculptural work that critiques the Internet's obsession with blue ice in Iceland. In this work, I appropriate online images of the Icelandic tourist attraction, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and reconfigure them digitally into physical braids. The forms are a nod to braid or knot theory. Braid theory has recently been applied to fluid mechanics, specifically to the field of chaotic mixing in fluid flows. I used these concepts in approaching the permutational possibilities of image combination while simultaneously mimicking the similarity in shape between braids and human chromosomes. As an image and an object, the work encapsulates the slipperiness of images, ice and bodies. Photography by Patrik Ontkovic.

“As a multidisciplinary exhibit, The Factory showcases a multitude of visual arts, including but not limited to: textiles, sculptures, video art, sound, paintings, photography, and art installations. This fosters a diverse and dynamic show, welcoming a broad audience. The vision is to (re)create the immersive art exhibition, The Factory, in the remote town of Djúpavík. By building a bridge between the vanished fishing industry and new contemporary art, Djúpavík‘s old herring factory gains a modern and attractive aura. Contrasts merge and unify inside the old building. Thus, artworks will reference the spatial and environmental perception of Djúpavík and of Iceland as a whole. The goal is to support the community and the artists - to honor Iceland and its inspiring influence on people via art and culture.”
